I was just wondering, how important are conferences and the like for PhD applications? Does it vary by field? (I'm in English Lit, btw, so any info on its importance for that field would be particularly helpful.)

I'm looking for some advice. I'm applying to graduate school in English Literature. My professor/mentor recommended I apply to around 10-12ish schools.
